July 2002
July 12th
Work has been pretty hectic - lots of interviews to do. All has gone pretty well though and I have been fairly happy for a while!! I have a week off now - thank God! - the weather is so shit here in Bournemouth tho :-( There is a chance that we could get a last minute deal on an Oriana cruise to the Norwegian Fjords which leaves on Sunday. Fingers crossed!!
Sunday 14th July
"We are Sailing!"
Well, the phone call came at 4pm yesterday and 24 hours later we were
setting sail from Southampton. Mum & Dad came to wave us off and we then
set about exploring the ship (finding time to stop
for afternoon tea of course). Got told off for not attending
lifeboat drill. We have booked tours for the first two ports - one of
them is a trip to the Briksdal Glacier which I am really looking forward
to. Company at our table for dinner was good -that's a relief - and we
enjoyed this evening's show "Elvis The Musical". Just time for a hot
chocolate and a stroll round the deck - we are passing through the
Straits of Dover with Arcadia behind us - before going to bed at 1am.
Monday 15th July All at sea
Started the day with the customary huge breakfast. We are at sea today so spent the morning wandering around the ship. Entered the individual quiz and came second - well, the subject was soaps! Can't believe the weather - we are in the middle of the North Sea it is calm as a mill pond and the sky is clear blue in all directions. Spent the afternoon lazing by the pool - taking a break to go to the front of the ship to make a guest worldwide appearance on the ship's webcam - at a pre-arranged time so mum and dad could watch back home.
Captain's Gala Dinner tonight so it was evening suits and bow ties for cocktails and dinner. Stayed in the bar afterwards till 2am. Why does the guy who played Elvis last night feel he has to wear a leather evening suit? Oh god, late to bed and up early tomorrow for our tour!
Tuesday 16th July
Today's tour was a boat trip on Leysfjord from Stavanger. The scenery is beautiful - we were on a smallish boat. Started the trip at a sedate pace but, as we were sat on the front deck, we certainly felt the breeze when he opened up the throttle!
The fjords have to be seen to be believed - high mountains rising almost vertically from mirror smooth waters; the mountains covered in trees clinging impossibly to the steep surface and frequently interrupted by waterfalls. One highlight of the day was when the skipper of our boat nudged its bow against the rock under one of the falls and the clear mountain water was collected for us to drink.
Wednesday 17th July Olden Days!
Today we were in Olden - a pretty village at the end of --fjord. Our trip today was to the Briksdal Glacier. This was a one hour walk up a mountain but, believe me, it was worth it! The Glacier is the "snout" of a much larger one further up in the mountains. We saw it first from a distance but, once we had walked further and got soaked by the spray of a huge waterfall, we rounded a corner and saw it up close. The size and colours of the ice was staggering - in places it is 1500 feet thick. The snout of the glacier "moves" by as much as six feet each day.
We were late sailing this evening due to "a fault with an important piece of machinery" - we think it was the cappuccino machine!
Thursday 18th July "Climb Every Mountain...!"
Geiranger today and another trip up into the mountains - much higher today - 5000 feet to the summit of Mount Delsnibba. It was a nerve-racking coach journey to the top with 47 180° bends on the road and sheer drops right at the side. The cloud was low but we drove through it as we got higher and so were able to admire some of the views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
In the evening we cruised back through Geraingerfjord.
This evening we made our first visit to the on board nightclub - "Harlequins". We went with a couple of girls that work with Paul at P&O head office in Southampton. They on board looking after those passengers on board that are on their first cruise. We had a great time laughing at the one guy dancing extremely badly on the dance floor. A few others got up to dance when they played Steps - of course we did too - one women (who was extremely fat - we called her "The Food Mountain") - said that we were good dancers followed by "you're not gay are you? They are always good dancers". Er, hello! Later she asked Paul's friends if they were "with us" - Tina explained that we were just friends through work and that they were working on the ship as escorts - I think the woman left even more confused!
Friday 19th July Bergen
Our final port of call was Bergen. We decided to skip more trips into the mountains today and opted for a simple tour of the town.
We have now set sail for Southampton - we arrive Sunday morning. It's the Captain's Gala Dinner tonight.
